The Syrian rebel forces led by the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, launched a counterattack early Wednesday morning and have already attacked the regime with thousands of dead and wounded. In addition, they completed a great military achievement for them and are now close to regaining control of the city of Aleppo, the second largest city in Syria that was under the control of the regime since 2016.

Already at the beginning of the attack, it was reported that the rebels took over dozens of villages and settlements, and reached about 10 kilometers west of Aleppo, but during the day they managed to reach the heart of the city, hit many of Assad's men and removed the regime's signs from central sites in the city.

The rebels take control of weapons left behind by the Assad army, after they lost the battle in the city, where a statue was placed in honor of the brother of the Syrian president, Bassel al-Assad, and from which the rebels took down the country's flag. Many sources report the withdrawal of Assad's army forces and the abandonment of fighting positions.

The rebel groups fighting in Syria are made up of different bodies and organizations, and are not one piece. Many of the forces fighting against Assad's army are brutal Salafist-Jihadist terrorist organizations. One of the main forces among the rebels is the terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an affiliate of al-Qaeda in Syria, formerly Jabhat al-Nusra.

Yesterday it was reported in Iran that Khomers Pourhashmi, a senior commander in the Revolutionary Guards, was killed by the rebels in the battles on the western outskirts of the city of Aleppo. According to some reports, he was the commander of Iran's military advisers in Syria. Some Arab reports claim that he was killed in a targeted assassination operation directed against him.

In response to the rebel attacks, the air forces of Russia and Syria bombed many targets identified with the rebels, including civilian targets, in recent days. It is estimated that so far about 300 people have been killed in the fighting, including civilians and children. At least a few Russian soldiers were wounded or captured by rebel forces.
